"There's something about the outside of a horse,
that's good for the inside of a man (or woman or child)."
Sir Winston Churchill

Horse Sense for Business Success SM

Horses become the teachers for learning about teamwork, leadership, communication, problem-solving and personal insights in this powerful form of experiential learning.  Diane Dean and Rhonda Smith facilitate the activities with these amazing animals to maximize the insights and lessons learned.

We use an unusual team approach in The Horse Course workshops:

  • An Executive coach and organizational development professional that assesses the interactions of the people, between the people and horses, while setting and attending to the goals of the participants;
  • An equine professional that ensures the safety of the participants and the horses while providing insight into horse and herd dynamics through co-facilitating;
  • The horses that provide immediate and honest feedback without an agenda or stake in the outcome of the workshops;
  • The participants that are actively involved in their learning and growth process while having fun!

What makes horses such powerful teachers?

Like humans, horses are social animals with defined roles among their peers.  They have distinct personalities and attitudes, and experience a variety of emotions.  However, they also have many qualities that are admired and aspired to by humans, such as perfect honesty, unconditional acceptance, and instant forgiveness.  Horses have the ability to mirror exactly what the human body is telling them physically and emotionally through nonverbal communication.  Working with horses during these activities requires both mental and physical engagement.  Horses' intimidating size and power give amazing metaphors in learning to deal with challenging and intimidating situations within all working environments. If you can learn to use 'horse sense' in managing your teams, you'll have more successful business relationships and reduced stress and tension in accomplishing your goals.

According to experts, our communication can consist of opposing attitudes-predator and prey. Predators have a predictable set of behaviors-whether lions, tigers, Homo sapiens or wolves-such as "focusing its attention on its prey". Prey animal also have a set of behaviors we recognize-constant surveillance with an expanded awareness of possible danger. How does this translate to the business world? Humans have predator/prey sets of behaviors that interfere with positive, effective relationships when trying to get the job done. Though a horses is a prey animal, it is willing to become your partner IF you drop your predator behaviors-cooperation ensues. You can then learn to transfer the new behaviors to your business for collaborative relationships.
